The WASCAL Doctoral Research Programme in West African Climate System (DRP-WACS), hosted by the Federal University of Technology, Akure, is reinforcing its position as a hub for cutting-edge climate research and capacity development in West Africa. This was evident at the 35th International Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Meteorological Society (NMetS), where WASCAL scholars and faculty contributed meaningfully to discussions shaping the future of meteorology and climate science.

From engaging oral presentations to insightful poster sessions, Batch 6 doctoral researchers demonstrated the depth and relevance of their work, addressing critical climate challenges facing the region. Their strong presence reflected not only academic rigor but also the growing influence of WASCAL-trained scientists in shaping climate discourse across Africa.

“The participation of our students highlights the quality and diversity of research within the programme and our commitment to training scientists equipped to respond to regional climate challenges,” noted the Programme Director, Professor Ifeoluwa Adebowale Balogun.

The conference also served as a platform for recognising excellence within the WASCAL network. Professor Temi Ologunorisa, one of the Batch 6 lecturers, was honoured with the Society’s prestigious Fellow Award for his significant contributions to meteorology and climate science. Professor Jimmy Adegoke, the former Interim Executive Director of WASCAL, also received the same distinction, reaffirming his enduring impact on climate research and institutional development in the region.

Thought-provoking keynote sessions further elevated the discourse. Leading experts, including Professor Andreas Fink from the Institute of Climate Research at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, and Professor Daouda Koné, Capacity Building Director of WASCAL, delivered compelling insights on climate systems, research innovation, and the urgent need for strengthened capacity across the region.

As the conference concluded, one message stood out clearly, “WASCAL is not only contributing to global climate discourse, but it is also actively shaping it.” Through its strong academic programmes and strategic partnerships, the institution continues to drive solutions that matter for West Africa and beyond.
