Dr. Ousmane Badji

WASCAL proudly celebrates the remarkable achievement of Dr. Ousmane Badji, an alumnus from the first batch of the WASCAL research programme on Climate Change & Marine Sciences (MRP-CCMS), who has been selected among only 14 mid-level professionals from developing countries worldwide for the highly prestigious United Nations-Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2026.

This internationally recognised fellowship provides a unique platform for advancing research and leadership in sustainable ocean governance, marine conservation, and science-based policy development. As part of the programme, Dr. Badji will undertake a research project focused on marine spatial planning and integrated ocean management along the Senegalese coast, a critical area for strengthening sustainable marine governance and protecting coastal ecosystems.

Currently based at the United Nations Headquarters, Dr. Badji will continue his fellowship in collaboration with a host institution to develop further policy-relevant scientific outputs that contribute to inclusive and sustainable ocean management.

Dr. Badji’s achievement reflects the growing impact of WASCAL’s capacity-building efforts in climate, marine, and environmental sciences across West Africa. His success stands as an inspiration to emerging African researchers and professionals dedicated to advancing sustainable development and ocean stewardship.

WASCAL warmly congratulates Dr. Ousmane Badji on this outstanding global recognition and wishes him continued success in shaping the future of sustainable ocean governance and marine conservation.
