The West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) invites qualified private companies or consortia to submit proposals for the long-term operation, management, and commercialisation of the Gyankobaa Hybrid Waste-to-Energy (W2E) Facility located in Kumasi, Ghana.
This state-of-the-art pilot facility was established under the project Hybrid Waste to Energy as a Sustainable Solution for Ghana (Waste2Energy – W2E), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). Developed through an international partnership led by the University of Rostock, the German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ), SRH Berlin University of Applied Sciences, WASCAL, CSIR, UENR, ,KNUST and KsTU , the facility serves as a flagship demonstration of integrated waste valorisation and renewable energy technologies for West Africa.
About the Facility
Situated in Gyankobaa, approximately 25 km northwest of Kumasi in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, the facility integrates multiple waste treatment and renewable energy technologies to transform municipal solid waste and biomass into valuable products and clean energy. The site has been designed as both a commercial demonstration plant and a research platform supporting innovation, capacity building, and technology transfer.
The infrastructure includes:
- Municipal solid waste reception and sorting facilities;
- A fully operational anaerobic digestion and biogas production plant with combined heat and power (CHP) generation;
- A hybrid solar photovoltaic power system with battery energy storage;
- Composting and organic waste recovery facilities;
- Plastic recycling, Refuse Derived-Fuel (RDF) and plastic pellet production systems;
- Pyrolysis technologies for plastic and biomass valorisation;
- Modern laboratory facilities for research, testing, and innovation;
- Supporting logistics, water supply, administration, and utility infrastructure.
In the framework of the sustainability plan of the plant, WASCAL and its partners seek to recruit a private company or a consortium for the full operation of the plant.

Eligible Applicants
Participation is open to legally established firms, joint ventures, consortia, and special purpose vehicles (SPVs) that meet the eligibility, technical, legal, and financial requirements specified in the RFP. International Bidders are encouraged to partner with qualified Ghanaian firms to promote local participation, technology transfer and institutional capacity development. Non-Ghanaian companies should apply with at least one Ghanaian firm as a consortium.
