As Ghana celebrates Farmers’ Day 2025, WASCAL honours the vital role of farmers whose dedication sustains the nation and fuels its development. Despite mounting challenges from climate change, land degradation, and environmental pressures, farmers across the country continue to feed communities, support livelihoods, and drive economic growth. WASCAL has been at the forefront of supporting farmers and rural communities through initiatives that combine scientific research, innovation, and capacity building.
Through its innovative programmes, scholarships, and regional climate initiatives, WASCAL empowers farmers, youth, and communities. Together, they are building a sustainable and food-resilient future across West Africa. The Climate Change Action Now (CCAN) initiative is designed to equip communities with early warning systems, climate-smart agriculture training, and practical adaptation strategies, empowering farmers to make informed decisions and increase their resilience to climate risks.
Complementing this, WASCAL’s scholarship programme in Climate Change and Land Use at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) cultivates highly skilled scientists who are addressing pressing agricultural and environmental challenges across West Africa. Graduates of this programme are already contributing to climate-informed policymaking, sustainable land use practices, and initiatives that directly support smallholder farmers.
WASCAL’s impact also extends beyond Ghana through projects such as the Femmes Pro-Forêts (FPROF) Climate Change Adaptation initiative in Guinea, implemented with support from WASCAL’s regional networks, including Burkina Faso. FPROF empowers women and youth through nature-based solutions, agroforestry, and community-led conservation efforts, enhancing livelihoods while protecting biodiversity.
By investing in climate science, fostering community engagement, and advancing innovative climate-smart solutions, WASCAL is helping to secure a sustainable, productive, and food-resilient future for Ghana and the wider West African region.
This Farmers’ Day, WASCAL celebrates not only Ghana’s farmers but also the power of science and innovation in shaping a resilient future for the region.
