WASCAL IS HIRING: Coordinator of the International Master’s Programme in renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen (IMP-EGH)

Overview

WASCAL is a research and education-focused institution designed to provide knowledge and climate services that should help tackle the climate change challenge and thereby enhance the resilience of human and environmental systems. It does so by strengthening the research capacity and infrastructure in West Africa related to climate change by pooling the expertise of twelve West African countries and Germany. The West African countries include Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d ‘Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo.

As part of its capacity building portfolio, WASCAL, with financial support from the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), is implementing an International Master’s Programme in renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen (IMP-EGH), which was established in 2021. WASCAL is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to fill the position of Program Coordinator.

This program is implemented by WASCAL in collaboration with four West African Universities (Université Abdou Moumouni, Niger, Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Côte d’Ivoire, Université de Lomé, Togo and Université Cheick Anta Diop, Senega), and German universities and research institutions.

The coordinator will build a robust communication environment and contribute to foster collaborative efforts among stakeholders and partners including relevant public and private institutions and industries. He/She will strongly contribute to the program’s academic excellence and play a key role in implementing and monitoring as well as developing strategic partnership for its sustainability. The incumbent will strengthen synergy between the Capacity Building Department and the Competence Centre particularly with the Regional Coordination for Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen.

The Co-ordinator will work under and report to the Director of Capacity Building, based at the WASCAL Headquarters in Accra, Ghana.

The position is open to citizens from the 12 WASCAL member countries.

Main responsibilities

The IMP-EGH coordinator should be well motivated and knowledgeable in the development and implementation of academic programs. He will have the following responsibilities:

  •  Contribute to the development of all required technical and administrative documentation for preparation of each phase of the program (proposals, work plans, budget, etc.);
  • Take part in the interactions and collaborative activities in preparation and implementation of each phase of the program that may involve the funder and all the program partners;
  • Strongly participate in the development of calls, selection process and onboarding activities of students;
  • Support and monitor implementation progress of the program agenda in close collaboration with the directors of the graduate schools in the four universities and all the partners in Germany;
  • Develop and monitor a communication system between the students and host institutions as well as WASCAL HQ to ensure fast and appropriate resolution of any matters arising
  • Support scientific research and students supervision including definition of relevant topics in West African and global context;
  • Participate in the accreditation process and fulfilment of all the needed requirements to remain accredited.
  • Conduct mapping of relevant national, regional and international partners for enhanced collaboration and successful implementation of the program including internships and employment opportunities for students and graduates;
  • Keep track record and trace the program’s alumni and support the students’ networking efforts;
  • Draft progress and annual reports of the program;
  • Represent the Capacity Building Director in meetings, events and wherever requested;
  • Execute any other task that may be assigned by the Director of Capacity Building;

Qualifications and experiences

Interested candidates should have the experience and the following qualifications:

  • A PhD in the field of renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen, Energy, Energy efficiency, Climate Change or any related field;
  • Proven experience in the coordination and management of an academic program;
  • At least 5 years’ experience research and teaching at university level in renewable energy, energy efficiency, green hydrogen and related disciplines;
  • At least 3 research publications in specialised journals in the field of energy, renewable energy, green hydrogen and other related fields;
  • An in depth knowledge of global energy transition and green hydrogen technologies;
  • Good knowledge and understanding of West Africa’s as well as international policies and strategies in renewable energy, green hydrogen, climate and environment;
  • Demonstrated experience in working  in a multidisciplinary team and problem solving skills;
  • Collaboration experience with national and international partners including funding agencies and institutions;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in both French and English ;
  • Working experience with private sector will be an asset;
