The hybrid waste to energy as a sustainable solution for Ghana is an applied science project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research from Germany and supported by the Ministry of Environment Science and Technology Innovation, the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to develop solutions for the energetic valorization of municipal solid waste in Ghana. As a part of the project a pilot hybrid 400 kW demonstration waste to energy power plant has been constructed. The plant will start operations in February 2021 and will require capable Ghanaians with the necessary skill set to operate the facility. The West African Science Service Center for Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) would like to use part of its budgetary allocation to support the recruitment and employment of the following position until the end of the project funding phase. Employees will have the opportunity to continue working under the plant management body based on their performance after the funding phase. Plant Engineer

Job summary

The plant engineer is responsible for the security, maintenance, and services of work facilities and assets to ensure that the machines/components and all unit’s operations in the facility are working efficiently. The plant engineer will also be responsible for ensuring that all engineering requirement as well as final products are delivered on time to customers. The plant engineer shall also ensure that the plant is able to operate in flexible mode anytime needed. He is also entrusted with the operation of the waste-to-energy plant daily.

Job Description/Requirements

Minimum qualification: BSc. Or BTech. in the following subject areas; Mechanical Engineering, plant engineering, process engineering, electrical engineering/material engineering

Experience Level: Senior level

Experience Length: minimum 3 years

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and coordinate all planned preventive maintenance, reactive maintenance, installations, and refurbishments.
  • To maintain accurate records of planned maintenance and statutory inspections
  • Documenting and tracking the progress of facility projects, recurring issues, and long-term repair issues
  • Conduct regular key inventories and maintain appropriate records.
  • To manage, supervise, and coordinate the work of contractors for all planned and reactive maintenance and small project works.
  • To assist in planning for future development in line with strategic objectives, especially regarding hybridization and flexibilization
  • To allocate and manage space.
  • To manage the security and cleaning contractors to ensure objectives are being met for the provision of those services.
  • To ensure the maintenance of an attractive and safe working environment
  • To ensure that the Company always remains compliant with relevant statutory responsibilities.
  • To liaise with external bodies as appropriate (Ghana Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, Environmental Protection Agency, the Municipal Assemblies etc.)

Plant technician

Job summary

The plant technician will support the plant engineer in running the facility and will report directly to the plant Engineer.

Job Description/Requirements

Minimum qualification: Higher National Diploma in the following subject areas; Mechanical Engineering, plant engineering, process engineering, electrical engineering/material engineering

Experience Length: minimum 2 years

Responsibilities:

  • Carry out planned preventive maintenance, reactive maintenance, installations, and refurbishments. Handle the day-to-day operation of the waste-to-energy plant.
  • Assist the plant engineer to operate the various units in the plant.
  • Support the plant engineer to document and track the progress of facility projects, recurring issues, and long-term repair issues.
  • Support the plant engineer to conduct regular key inventories and maintain appropriate records.
  • Support the plant engineer to overseeing and agreeing contracts and providers for services including security, parking, cleaning, catering, technology and so on.

Educational Requirements & Experience: 

  • A Higher National Diploma or equivalent in Engineering-Mechanical/electrical/Chemical
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience of working in a similar pilot plant facilities management or engineering project management role, within a medium to large enterprises/organizations
  • Experience working in an environment of health and safety and statutory compliance. Experience of dealing with ISO 140001 or ISO 50001 management systems is an advantage.

Laboratory Technician

Job summary

The laboratory technician will be responsible for operating the plant laboratories

Job Description/Requirements

Minimum qualification: BSc/BTech/HND. in the following subject areas; Mechanical Engineering, plant engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering/material engineering

Experience Length: minimum 3 years

Responsibilities:

  • Carry out basic analytical laboratory operations
  • Manage the plants laboratory
  • Analyze samples of the plant products
  • Manage the quality standards of products from the plant
  • Conduct regular key inventories and maintain appropriate records in the laboratory
  • Keep detailed records of all samples tested in the laboratory
  • Convert and operate the laboratory according to ISO standards
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and inventory of all chemicals and equipment in the laboratory
  • Develop standard operating procedures and ensure that the lab protocols are followed
  • To ensure the maintenance of an attractive and safe working environment
  • To ensure that the laboratory always remains compliant with relevant statutory responsibilities.
  • Report directly to the plant engineer
  • To liaise with external bodies as appropriate (Environmental protection agency, the Ghana standards boards, etc)
  • Make presentations to visitors and participate in training programmes organized by the company

  • Make the laboratory also a standardized laboratory under the Ghana Standardisation Authority

Operational efficiency

  • To develop and lead plans for ensuring that the laboratory uses resources in an efficient and sustainable manner including energy and water.
  • Has to develop in such a way that the laboratory can sustain on itself due to the active acquirement of contracts with other companies and universities including research projects

Educational Requirements & Experience 

  • A degree or equivalent in Engineering (Environmental/Chemical/Civil/), Chemistry or other relevant degree level qualification.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience of working in a similar position within a medium to large organization, including line management responsibility for a multi skilled team.
  • Experience working in an ISO compliant laboratory.
  • A working knowledge of Occupational health and Safety.
  • Ability to work in compliance with OHSE and EMS policies.
  • A good knowledge of IT.

Job Summary

The plant supervisor needs to be business-minded problem solvers, with keen interpersonal and problem-solving abilities.

Core Facility Management

SECURITY OFFICER

Job summary

A competent Security Officer is needed to undertake the surveillance of our premises and protection of our staff and visitors by keeping our facilities safe and problem-free. He/she will be responsible to detect any suspicious behavior and preventing vandalism, thefts or other criminal behavior.

A security officer must be well-trained in surveillance and dealing with perpetrators. The ideal candidate will inspire respect and authority as well as possess a high level of observation.

Security Officer responsibilities include:

  • Patrolling premises regularly to maintain order and establish presence.
  • Monitoring and authorizing entrance of vehicles or people in the property.
  • Removing wrongdoers or trespassers from the area.
  • Prevents losses and damage by reporting irregularities.
  • informing violators of policy and procedures.
  • permitting entry only on authorization and security checks.
  • inspecting buildings, equipments, and access points.
  • Secure all exits, doors, and windows after end of operations.
  • Check surveillance cameras periodically to identify disruptions or unlawful acts.
  • Investigate people for suspicious activity or possessions.
  • Respond to alarms by investigating and assessing the situation.
  • Provide assistance to people in need.
  • Apprehend and detain perpetrators according to legal protocol before arrival of authorities.

Requirements
