WASCAL proudly congratulates Ms. Débora Coelho on the successful defense of her master’s thesis, marking another significant milestone in advancing sustainable aquaculture research in Cabo Verde and across West Africa.
Her research, titled “Evaluation of the Impact of Supplementing with Navicula sp. Native to Cabo Verde on the Growth and Survival of Post-larvae of Penaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) at the Shrimp Farm in São Vicente, Cabo Verde”, explored the potential of using locally sourced microalgae as a sustainable alternative to imported species commonly used in shrimp hatcheries.
The study demonstrated that the native strain of Navicula sp. effectively supported improved shrimp growth while maintaining high survival rates and suitable water quality. These findings highlight the promising role of indigenous microalgae in strengthening sustainable aquaculture practices, reducing dependence on imported inputs, and enhancing local production systems.
Ms. Coelho’s research contributes valuable scientific evidence that supports sustainable food systems, climate resilience, and the development of the blue economy in West Africa.
