The 1st Macaronesia Marine Biology and Technology Symposium, hosted by the European Union TWILIGHTED Project, provided a strategic platform for advancing marine science dialogue, one where WASCAL’s presence was both visible and impactful.
Representing WASCAL, Professor Corrine Almeida, Director of the Master’s Research Programme in Climate Change and Marine Sciences (MRP-CCMS), delivered a compelling presentation that positioned the programme as a growing hub of scientific excellence in West Africa.
Her intervention went beyond reporting statistics; it demonstrated the tangible impact of WASCAL’s investment in capacity development. Over six years, the programme has produced thirty-eight (38) graduates and contributed to peer-reviewed research across six critical thematic areas, including ocean dynamics, marine biodiversity, fisheries science, and marine pollution. This body of work reflects not only academic output but also practical knowledge relevant to addressing climate and ocean challenges in the region.
Prof. Almeida’s presentation also reinforced WASCAL’s commitment to inclusiveness in science. By highlighting gender distribution within the programme, she emphasised the importance of empowering women as key contributors to innovation and resilience in climate research.
Engaging with leading scientists and stakeholders at the symposium, WASCAL strengthened its international visibility and reinforced its role as a partner in advancing collaborative research and training. The presentation ultimately served as both a showcase of achievements and a call for deeper partnerships to sustain scientific progress in marine and climate studies.
