Doctoral Programme Climate Change and Land Use

The populations in West Africa are mainly agrarian, thus scientific knowledge of climate change and its impact on land use are essential for developing adaptation and mitigation measures. The variation in climate conditions compounded by poor land management practices are threats to the development of the region. The region is yet to develop approaches and applications based on the use of remote sensing technologies and geographic information systems to provide data and information related to appropriate land use management and land administration.

Objectives

The Doctoral Programme Climate Change and Land Use (CCLU) is focusing on capacity building at the doctoral level to help develop the knowledge necessary for sustainable land use and management in the face of climate change. The programme will train participants in data acquisition, analysis and interpretation of spatial data focusing on the use of remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and empirical and mathematical modeling tools related to climate change and land use in partnership with German institutions. This should contribute to strengthening human capacity in West Africa for developing appropriate adaptation strategies to manage the impact of climate change on land and to develop resilient land use systems.

Kwame Nkrumah University

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana, was established since 1961. Its students’ population was above 23000 in 2010 with over 5000 graduate students. The university is organized into a collegiate system with six (6) Colleges: Science, Engineering, Health Sciences, Agriculture and Natural Sciences, Architecture and Planning, Art and Social Sciences. The GRP on Climate Change and Land Use will be implemented under the responsibility of the School of Graduate and Research Studies in collaboration with the Quality Assurance Department of KNUST.
