Position Overview: As a Renewable Energy Project Technical Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the development and execution of renewable energy projects. Your primary responsibilities will include assisting the project team with technical tasks, conducting research, analysing data, preparing reports, and ensuring project documentation is organized and up to date. You will work closely with the project team, and other stakeholders to help drive the successful implementation of renewable energy and green hydrogen initiatives.

WASCAL is a research and education-focused institute designed to provide knowledge and climate services that should help tackle the climate change challenge and thereby enhance the resilience of human and environmental systems. It does so by strengthening the research capacity and infrastructure in West Africa related to climate change by pooling the expertise of twelve West African countries and Germany. The West African countries include Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d ‘Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinee, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo.

WASCAL, with support from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), is implementing Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen projects in the West African sub-region. WASCAL is seeking highly motivated and talented candidates to fill the position of Project Technical Assistant

Under close supervision from the Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen Coordinator, the successful candidate will perform the following duties:

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Technical Support:
    • Assist the RE coordination team in initiation and development of new projects in West Africa, implementation and monitoring of ongoing projects
    • Assist the project team in conducting technical feasibility studies for renewable energy projects, including site assessments, resource assessments, and technology evaluations.
    • Collaborate with engineers and technicians to review project plans, specifications, and drawings, ensuring compliance with technical requirements.
    • Support the identification and evaluation of suitable renewable energy and green hydrogen technologies, components, and suppliers for project implementation.
    • Assist in the development and review of technical specifications for equipment procurement.
  2. Data Analysis and Reporting:
  3. Collect, compile, and analyze data related to renewable energy and green hydrogen projects, such as energy production, equipment performance, and environmental impact.
  4. Prepare accurate reports, presentations, and technical documents summarizing project data, findings, and recommendations.
  5. Support research on emerging technologies, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements to support project decision-making.
  • Documentation and Project Management:
  1. Maintain project documentation, including contracts, and technical specifications, ensuring accuracy and accessibility for the project team.
  2. Collaborate with project managers to monitor project timelines, deliverables, and milestones.
  3. Assist in coordinating project meetings, workshops, and site visits, documenting meeting minutes and action items.
  4. Contribute to the preparation of project proposals, budgets, and progress reports.

  6. Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, contractors, and community members, to gather relevant project information and address technical inquiries.
    • Support the coordination and implementation of community outreach initiatives to raise awareness of renewable energy and green hydrogen projects and address public concerns.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field, such as renewable energy, green hydrogen, engineering, or environmental science and related disciplines
  • At least 5 years of experience in renewable energy infrastructure projects, technical studies, energy and climate policy, project coordination
  • Strong technical aptitude and knowledge of renewable energy technologies, such as solar, wind, biomass, hydroelectric power.
  • Relevant experience in project development and project management principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and experience using relevant software tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, both in French and English, to prepare technical reports and effectively communicate complex concepts to stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities to handle multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Knowledge of environmental and regulatory requirements related to renewable energy projects.
