Overview
Tracks 2 and 3 are both hosted at Université Abdou Moumouni (UAM) in Niamey, Niger, in partnership with RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany. Students in both tracks follow the same pathway for Semesters 1 and 2, which are shared across all IMP-EGH tracks. From Semester 3, the two specialisations diverge with track-specific modules at UAM before students move to Aachen/Julich for Semester 4.
Both specialisations are rooted in the physical and engineering sciences, equipping graduates with the technical depth needed to address West Africa’s energy transition challenges — whether through solar photovoltaic deployment or integrated energy system design.

Shared Learning Objectives
Graduates of both specialisations will be able to:
- Apply fundamental principles of physics, electrochemistry and thermodynamics to energy conversion and storage systems.
- Analyse and evaluate renewable energy technologies and their integration into West African energy infrastructure.
- Understand the role of green hydrogen in the energy transition, including production, storage and power-to-X applications.
- Use energy systems analysis tools and simulation methods to model and optimise energy scenarios.
- Critically engage with energy policy frameworks, market structures and financing mechanisms relevant to the ECOWAS region.
- Conduct independent research and defend a master’s thesis before a joint international evaluation committee.
Programme Structure
Both tracks span 5 semesters (120 ECTS). Semesters 1, 2 and 3 are held entirely at UAM in Niamey, Niger. Students then move to RWTH Aachen University for Semester 4, before completing their master’s thesis in Semester 5.

Curriculum
The curriculum comprises 5 semesters of structured academic work, including taught courses, lab activities, field visits, and interaction with industry and policy stakeholders. Semesters 1 and 2 provide a shared foundation in energy sciences and green hydrogen technologies. Semester 3 delivers track-specific specialisation modules at UAM. Semester 4 at a German institution offers access to advanced courses and world-class research infrastructure. The programme concludes with an independent master’s thesis defended before a joint evaluation committee from UAM and RWTH Aachen / Forschungszentrum Jülich.
